Cat enclosures

Two prices for a cat enclosure can describe very different builds. The same questions, put to every business, show what each one is offering.

BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Will you come and measure before giving a price?A price from photos can change once someone sees the spot.
02Is it a kit you install, or built to fit on site?Ask which, so you know what each quote is for.
03What is the frame made of, and what mesh will you use?Ask how the mesh is fixed to the frame.
04Will it attach to a wall or fence, or stand on its own?If it attaches, ask what is fixed into the wall and how the join is finished.
05How will the cat get in and out of it?A cat door, a window or a tunnel. Ask whether fitting it is part of this quote.
06Are shelves, ramps or a roof cover in the price?Ask which are included and what the others add.
07Who arranges any permission the job needs?Ask before you book, and whether it changes the price.
08When can you start, and how long will the build take?Write down both.
09What warranty do you give on the materials and the workmanship, and for how long?Ask what it covers for each.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From catenclosure.com.au, a concept page.

What changes the price

Size is the obvious one, but the shape of the spot matters too. A sloping yard, an uneven wall or a run that wraps a corner takes more time than a flat, square space.

A kit put together on site and an enclosure built to fit are priced differently. So are extras like shelving, tunnels and a covered roof, which is why the sheet asks about each.

Before someone comes to measure

Decide where you would like it and how your cat will reach it from inside. Photograph the spot and note its rough length and width, so each business starts from the same picture.

On the day of the build, keep your cat indoors, and ask the business when the enclosure will be ready to use.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
